The Catholic Position on Health Care Reform 3/15/2010

The Democrat proposed health care reform bill has been portrayed in every which way by leading Democrats. The rhetoric has become so twisted that most Americans are unsure what it contains. This tactic of confusing and wearing down the American people into submission is deceptive. One of the issues in the debate of health care reform is the federal funding of abortions. We hear from the Democrats that it is not in the bill, but when you study the bill you find out otherwise. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued the following statement on the state of health care reform (click here) in which he says:

The American people and the Catholic bishops have been promised that, in any final bill, no federal funds would be used for abortion and that the legal status quo would be respected.

However, the bishops were left disappointed and puzzled to learn that the basis for any vote on health care will be the Senate bill passed on Christmas Eve. Notwithstanding the denials and explanations of its supporters, and unlike the bill approved by the House of Representatives in November, the Senate bill deliberately excludes the language of the Hyde amendment. It expands federal funding and the role of the federal government in the provision of abortion procedures. In so doing, it forces all of us to become involved in an act that profoundly violates the conscience of many, the deliberate destruction of unwanted members of the human family still waiting to be born.

Joe Biden Admits to Church Hierarchy: Nuns Over Bishops

According to Catholic Bishops the language in the current health care bill proposed by the Democrats is not clearly opposed to the government providing for or mandating abortion coverage.

Bishop William Murphy, Chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, wrote to Congress saying: “no health care reform plan should compel us or others to pay for the destruction of human life, whether through government funding or mandatory coverage of abortion.”

Joe Biden, vice President and Roman Catholic told Jake Tapper of ABC News in an interview that he found it easy to prefer siding with modernist nuns over abortion than the Bishops of the Catholic Church.

TAPPER: You're a observant Catholic.

BIDEN: Sure.

TAPPER: And there's a big debate right now within the Catholic Church about this bill, and a lot of these last few members that you're trying to get are Catholic democrats who oppose abortion. And I'm wondering, first of all, how you can side with nuns over bishops?

BIDEN: That's easy. I love the nuns.

In the same interview Joe Biden admits in his last response:

"You know we're going to control the insurance companies."

Joe not only must have been absent during the Catholic Hierarchy lesson at parochial school but must have also missed his latin philosophy lesson:

"Corruptisima respublica plurimae leges"

"In the most corrupt state are the most laws" (Terence)

See the link Kimberlee provided below. The long awaited chapel, unveiled with Wednesday's ceremony, will mark a milestone for the Catholic Church in America.

The symbol of a seminary using a chapel designed by Thomas Gordon Smith using classical Catholic architecture for a liturgy of the Latin Mass with Gregorian Chant spiritually resonates across the continent. Its mere presence in our nation gives us hope for bringing our American Church out of lukewarmness, out of a modernist rigidity, and a return to the sacred. It is a blow to stiff necked modernists. After all, our outward actions display our relationship with God. If we have high respect for God's temple, we will give Him our best architectural design, give Him our best act of reverence and worship that should alone be given to God different than what is given to man. Our modern forms of worship today in the American Church unfortunately fall short in many ways to meet such heights of a reverential relationship with God. They sure relate to man, but we pray to God not to man. Sundays especially are set aside, by divine precept, as the Lord's day - not man's day. Let's pray that our Church in America, to paraphrase St. Thomas More, when its head is finally done spinning, will find itself facing the right direction (not just talking ad orientem).

Much of the demand for Latin Mass comes from younger Catholics seeking a return to the old ways of worship.

Experts may see Latin as a "dead" language, but it is ideal for the church because the meaning of the words stand the test of time, Lee said.

"Thus Latin is excellent for theology and the transmission through succeeding ages of the unchanging - and unchangeable - doctrines in which the continuity of precise meanings is necessary among different cultures and times," he said.

"Also, one finds the sound of Latin to be sublime and lofty, devoted as it is uniquely to the worship of God."

Catholics do not need to understand Latin to appreciate the Latin Mass, Goodwin said.

In fact, it was only when Mass was said in the language of the community that "people drifted to the idea that the primary point of Mass was to understand everything that was said and going on," he said.

"Mass is not a lesson or a class, or a primary form for the exchange of information.

"The primary point (of Mass) is not to understand it for the information conveyed. The primary point is to be present with your heart and soul as our lady St. Mary and St. John were present at the foot of the cross," Goodwin said.

Mass is the re-presentation, in an unbloody manner, of the sacrifice of Calvary in which Jesus offered his life to atone for the sins of all humanity, Lee said.

Catholics attend Mass to "understand the experience and the reverence and the devotion and the solemnity that are proper to the worship of God," Goodwin said.
